How Storage Provider Location Affects Your Sync Speed

When you bring your own storage to LightUp.Cloud, the physical location of that S3 bucket relative to your team is the single biggest factor in how fast files sync. Every upload and download crosses the network between your devices and the storage endpoint, so the round-trip latency to that region sets a hard floor on throughput — no matter how fast your local connection is. Choosing a nearby provider region is the easiest way to get the same responsiveness that our on-premises deployments are known for.

Why Distance Matters

Data cannot travel faster than the speed of light through fibre, and every extra thousand kilometres adds measurable latency. That latency is not just a one-time cost — it is paid on every round trip, and file transfer protocols need many round trips to open connections, negotiate encryption, and acknowledge data. Higher latency shrinks the effective throughput of each connection because acknowledgements take longer to return.

Typical round-trip latency scales roughly with distance:

  • Same city (under ~5 ms): transfers run close to your local link speed — large design files feel instant.
  • Same country / neighbouring region (~10–30 ms): still fast for everyday collaboration and large uploads.
  • Another continent (~100–300 ms): each round trip is 10–50× slower, and many-small-file syncs crawl.

For workflows with many small files, the effect compounds: each file pays the latency cost, so a bucket on another continent can be several times slower than one in your own city — even when both buckets sit on identical hardware.

Choosing the Right Region

Pick the storage region closest to where most of your team works. If your studio is in Kyiv, a Ukrainian region will always beat one in the United States for daily collaboration. If your team is distributed, choose the region nearest the largest group, or the one nearest the people who move the most data — the architects pushing Lumion models or the photographers uploading high-resolution video.

  • Match the region to your team, not to your provider's default. Most S3 providers default to a distant region; always set it explicitly.
  • Keep collaborators and storage on the same continent. Cross-continent buckets are the most common cause of "why is sync slow?" tickets.
  • No lock-in. Because you always own the bucket, you can move to a closer provider later without migrating off LightUp.Cloud.

You choose this location during checkout, so you can match your bucket to your team before your first upload — and change providers later without lock-in.

LAN Sync Closes the Gap

For teams sharing an office, LightUp.Cloud's LAN sync lets devices discover each other and exchange files directly at local network speeds — up to 10 gigabits per second — sidestepping the trip to the storage region entirely for data that already exists on a nearby peer. Combined with a well-chosen region, this keeps everyday collaboration fast even for terabyte-sized datasets and large binary files that change often.

In short: choose the region closest to your team, keep your storage on the same continent as the people who use it most, and let LAN sync handle the rest. Learn more about how we achieve 10x faster file storage across the whole platform.
